Older drivers will have the opportunity to make sure they fit and are in good condition for driving their vehicles.

An upcoming CarFit event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Bill Marine Honda, 415 E. North St., Springfield.

The event – hosted by the Clark County Combine Health District, AARP, AAA and the American Occupational Therapy Association – is designed to have trained professionals take older drivers through a 12-point checklist with their vehicles.

Although CarFit was created specifically to address the needs of older drivers, people of any age can register to attend the event.

The CarFit team will recommend adjustments the drivers can make to help ensure they “fit” in their vehilces properly, including mirror angles, seat position, and foot positioning.

Occupational therapists will also be at the event to teach the older adult drivers techniques they can use to maintain and strengthen their driving health.

These events are important because of the growing number of older drivers taking to the roads. It’s estimated that by 2030, about one in four licensed drivers will be 65 or older.

CarFit is designed to help keep seniors safer when they’re behind the wheel.

Because personal mobility is critical for healthy aging, CarFit works to avoid ill-fitting vehiles that can become uncomfortable and unsafe to drive.
